3A DISTRICT 8

PRATT 35, LARNED 20

By BUDDY TABLER

Special to the Tribune

LARNED — For the third consecutive game, Larned had a bad third quarter that cost the Indians a chance for victory in a 35-20 loss in 3A, District 8 to Pratt Friday.

Leading 14-7 at halftime, Pratt scored 21 points after the break for a commanding 28-14 lead. In three straight losses Larned has been outscored 64-0 immediately following halftime.

Pratt (2-2, 1-0) plays at Cheney (4-0, 1-0 District) and Larned (0-3,0-1 District) travels to Holcomb (4-0, 1-0 District) next week.

Larned grabbed a 14-7 halftime lead on the strength of a 39-yard touchdown pass from Dillan Smith to Jack Stelter with 4:03 remaining in the first quarter and a 13-yard touchdown reception by Fernando Herrera from Smith with 5:15 remaining in the 2nd quarter.

Those two touchdowns by the Indians sandwiched a 20-yard touchdown run by Pratt’s Bryce Winsor.

After halftime it was a different story as Pratt switched offenses and moved to a Wildcat formation with Devon Weber taking the snaps and making most of the carries behind the blocking of fellow backs Enoch Walton and Bryce Winsor. Larned never solved the offense as the Greenbacks scored three straight touchdowns.

Pratt took the second half kickoff and methodically went 65 yards to tie the game at 14-14 on a 15-yard touchdown run by Winsor.

After holding Larned the Greenbacks scored on an 80-yard touchdown run by Devon Weber for a 21-14 lead.

Larned’s offense could not get any traction in the second half due to outstanding defensive line play by the Greenbacks. Pratt’s 220-pound nose guard Mason Melcher, gave Larned fits. After another Larned punt the Greenbacks put together another long drive and with 11:04 remaining in the game Weber again scored, on a 3-yard touchdown run for a 28-14 lead.

Larned responded as Jack Stelter got behind the defense and grabbed a 74-yard touchdown pass from Dillan Smith but the Indians had a bad snap on the extra point resulting in a 28-20 deficit with 10:17 remaining in the game. Pratt quarterback Blake Coss completed a 13-yard touchdown pass for a 35-20 final.

The Greenbacks pounded Larned with 289 rushing yards, led by Devon Weber with 183. Blake Coss completed just 1 of 3 passes and 1 touchdown.

Larned continued to struggle with 44 rushing yards. Smith completed 17 passes for 243 yards. The Indians lost one fumble.

The Indians were flagged 10 times totalling 89 yards, ending several promising drives.
