HAYS -- A 7-year "losing streak" for Great Bend's girls soccer team in the Western Athletic Conference League is finally over.
The Panthers snapped a 40-match WAC streak without a victory with a shocking 2-1 opener against Hays High Tuesday. The Panthers beat Dodge City 2-1 in 2019 for their last WAC win.
Standout sophomore Xali Arias scored the second half game-winner on a penalty kick. Natalia Rodriguez assisted Arias for a first-half goal.
The Panthers enjoyed the ride home from Hays.
"The team was in great spirits on the way home," said Great Bend soccer coach Noel Rodriguez. "We're looking for a winning season."
Goalkeeper Paige Trendel benefited from solid defense.
"Paige Trendel made plenty of saves. She had a great first game," Rodriguez said. "The defense stepped up big and played outstanding."
The Panthers' offense and midfield performed their jobs.
"Our midfield really handled the game," he said. "We have strong leaders in our midfield. Up front, our attack is finding their way. They’re fun to watch."
Rodriguez said it was a solid team win.
"Shout out to our team from starters to our bench," he said. "Our bench helped us out with crucial minutes."
