Panthers end WAC streak

DODGE CITY — A 6-year losing streak for the Great Bend soccer girls in the Western Athletic Conference League is finally over.

The Panthers forged a 1-1 tie Tuesday with Dodge City against the league's second-best team. Brissa Leyva had a great cross to assist Teegan Guerra for the first half goal. Dodge City tied the score 1-1 with a distant shot over improving goalie Paige Trendle.

The Panthers (5-8-3, 0-7-1 WAC) had lost 39 consecutive league matches after beating Dodge City in 2019.

"We played our best soccer game of the season," said Panther soccer coach Noel Rodriguez. "I’m happy to see our team perform how I’ve know we can perform all season. Big props to our team."

The Panthers have exhibited amazing progress from last year's 4-13 record. The Panthers finished 5-1-2 in non-league matches, beating Buhler, Junction City, Wichita Independent and Wichita Home School and tying Salina Central and Wichita Independent.
