Panther softball salvages one victory

DODGE CITY — The Dodge City Softball Classic delivered a reality check in 95-degree weather for the Great Bend Panthers (11-3).

Maize South pitcher Sophie Stockam struck out 18 batters in a 2-hit 11-0 shutout over the Panthers. Goddard Eisenhower hit a pair of homers and used a 5-run fourth inning for an 8-4 victory in the Dodge City Softball Classic.

MAIZE SOUTH 11, PANTHERS 0 (G2) — DeShawnna Bryant and Chayla Prendergast singled for the Panthers two hits. The Panthers put the softball into play five times. Bryant grounded out and popped out. Alyssa McCauley grounded out.

Stockam dominated with 18 strikeouts and no walks. The unbeaten 5A Mavericks (12-0) have yielded 11 runs with six shutouts. 

Maize South's Stockam drove home three runs with three hits. Kiley Thornquist drove home two runs.

GODDARD EISENHOWER 8, PANTHERS 4 (G1) — Eisenhower's Elleigh Tarpley homered for a 1-0 lead. The Panthers converted two errors into a 3-run third inning. Katherine Mazouch scored on Kya Behr's single. Behr and Bryant scored on Kamryn Koelsch's double.

Tarpley's double scored Baylie Eaton to start  5-run fourth inning. Tarpley scored on Liz Lindenman's double. Hahn's double scored George and Lindenman for a 6-3 lead. George homered in the fifth inning, 

Two Panther singles,  double and a fifth-inning walk was wasted when Mazouch was called out for offensive interference.

Hahn scored on a sixth-inning error. Behr scored on McCauley's seventh-inning groundout.

PANTHERS 6, WICHITA NORTHWEST 2 (G4) — Camdyn Post sparked a 6-2 victory over Wichita Northwest with three hits, two runs scored and two RBI.  

DERBY 4, PANTHERS 1 (G3) — Derby pitcher Ava Boden shut down the Panthers' offense with nine strikeouts while yielding six hits in the Dodge City Softball Classic. The Panthers drop to 11-4.

Denver Ringo singled in Callie Umphres for a 1-0 lead after two innings. Ringo delivered two hits. Umphreys doubled and Alyssa McCauley, Katherine Mazouch, Camdyn Post all singled.

Derby's Olivia Parra drove in Karlie Demel and Carsen Carpenter's single scored Brielle Hedrick and Parra for a 3-1 lead. Carpenter scored on a double steal in the fifth inning for Derby (11-3).
