Runner-up Panthers earn top 10 medals

HAYS – Great Bend’s sixth-place Cole Streck (84) and 10th-place Scott Heilman (84) sparked the Panthers (349) to runner-up at Tuesday’s Blazer Golf Invitational at Smoky Hill Country Club. Streck birdied the par 4 10th hole. Heilman birdied the par 4 seventh hole.

Great Bend also counted scores by 15th-place Brantley Baldwin (87) and 24th-place Cal Dunekack (96). Play was conducted in 40 degree weather with 20 mph north winds, creating challenging playing conditions.

“It was a tough day with very cool temperatures and brisk north winds that made scoring difficult,” said Great Bend coach Travis McAtee. “Overall, we struggled with the conditions, but managed second-place finish.  There were lessons to be learned today. We hope to move forward improving in some areas as the season goes along.”

Garden City (336) captured the first of five Western Athletic Conference meets. Each school will host a WAC home meet. Dodge City’s Cooper Scheck (78) tied with Topeka West’s Miles Alonzo (78) for medalist honors.
