Panthers head to 5A wrestling regional

VALLEY CENTER – No. 1 ranked Goddard is a five-time defending state wrestling champion. The Lions will be joined by No. 2 Maize, No. 4 Great Bend, No. 5 Arkansas City, No. 7 Newton, No. 8 McPherson and No. 10 Wichita Kapaun-Mt. Carmel at the Valley Center regional Friday and Saturday. The top eight qualifiers advance to the 5A state meet at Park City.

The Great Bend Panthers feature seven state-ranked wrestlers – No. 5 Kadin Spragis (31-10, 106); No. 5 Wyatt Weber (28-12, 120); No. 5 Drew Liles (32-3, 126); No. 6 Carsyn Schooler (27-3, 132); No. 2 George Weber (26-4, 138); No. 1 Gage Fritz (39-1, 145) and No. 4 Alex Randolph (34-4, 160).

Great Bend captured an outright Western Athletic Conference dual championship for the first time since 2006. Great Bend coach Nathan Broeckelman expects the seven state-ranked to qualify along with at least one other wrestler. The west regional features 56 state-ranked wrestlers compared to 26 in the east.

"It's a loaded regional with state-ranked teams and wrestlers," said Broeckelman. "The western regional is always competitive. We've enjoyed a great regular season, but we'd rather fly under the radar. I don't believe Goddard or Maize are too concerned about Great Bend. We matched up really well in dual matches all year. I know our guys will come out and battle in every match. We want to qualify as many guys as we can and get to next week.". 

3A RUSSELL REGIONAL — Hoisington's two-time state champion Wyatt Pedigo (30-0, 195) is unbeaten and Team Kansas Colorado national champion. Pedigo captured the 195-pound title last year. Ball (18-3, 170) is a two-time state qualifier who placed fifth and sixth the past two years. Quentin Boxberger (9-13, 113) and Cole Steinert (23-5, 152) are returning state qualifiers.
