Blue Valley ends Stafford's dream season

RANDOLPH BLUE VALLEY GIRLS 50, STAFFORD 22 — Blue Valley ended a historic season for Stafford's girls with a 50-22 semifinal victory in Monday's Wakefield 1A Division 2 basketball substate.

Stafford (12-13) underwent a program-changing season with the best girls basketball record in more than 20 years. 

The Trojans competed to the season's final buzzer with Ariana Delgadillo scoring a buzzer-beater on the game's final play to cap an 8-point night. 

Rylee Ferguson converted three consecutive 3-pointers for nine points. 

The Trojans earned small victories. They outscored Blue Valley 11-10 in the fourth quarter. After getting outscored 25-2, the Trojans made it 25-20 after halftime. Sanders scored the first basket after being down 21-0.

"It's good to play good teams to see how we can get better," said Stafford coach Nichols Minks. "Their height and length hurt us," Minks said. "Rylee caught fire. She's a good shooter when she sets her feet."

The future is bright for coach Nicholas Minks keyed by back-to-back Heart of the Plains middle school basketball championships. The Trojans feature no seniors.

"Our sophomore class will be good next year playing as juniors along with the eighth-graders who will be coming in next yea," Minks said. 

Blue Valley's Bryleigh Brockman scored 15 points and Lydia Dumler added 10 points.

STAFFORD 52, WAKEFIELD 14— Ariana Delgadillo and Rylee Fergison each scored 15 points as Stafford's girls downed Wakefield 54-14 for the Trojans' first home postseason victory in more than 20 years.

Stafford led 29-8 at halftime and coasted home. The Trojans (12-12) play Monday at Randolph Blue Valley (15-8) in the Wakefield semifinals.

STAFFORD GIRLS 44, ATTICA 39 — Stafford's girls broke a school record with seven 3-pointers and secured the best record in two decades with a 44-39 Heart of the Plains basketball victory over Attica.

Stafford's girls (11-12) play Wakefield (3-17) for the first home postseason game in more than 20 years.
