It was the home-like setting that first attracted Hoisington sisters Laura Barnard and Jettie Zoller to Aster Estates, a home-plus residence at 155 NW 10th Avenue, just north of Great Bend.
And now, several months later, while the “homey-atmosphere” is still important, the sisters are also pleased that hospice services are provided to their mother, Teddy Williamson, on a regular basis.
Zoller wanted to share her family’s experience during November, which is National Hospice & Palliative Care Month.
Williamson, 85, a long-time Hoisington resident, has congestive heart failure.
“Because of the smaller setting with only seven residents, Mom enjoys individual attention every day from the Aster Estates staff, which includes nurse’s aides and medication aides,” Zoller said. “They provide personal-hygiene and other services, along with three home-cooked meals a day.
“This care is supplemented by hospice nurses who come in at least a couple of times a week and are just a phone call away 24/7.”
The hospice team also includes the person’s doctor, along with registered nurses, certified aides, social workers and clergy.
“This whole group is available to meet Mom’s physical, social and spiritual needs,” Zoller said. “Hospice is a wonderful program that can help many individuals and families.
“Aster Estates is a great place to receive hospice services,” she added. “Pam Lewis (RN and owner) does a great job of answering your questions and actively participating in day-to-day care. I encourage anyone with questions to talk with her, their doctor and hospice providers.”
Zoller also noted that hospice services usually include bereavement care after a loved one has passed. “This is a great service for families that want support during their grieving period.”
Pam Lewis
Pam Lewis, RN who lives at Aster Estates, is especially pleased with this year’s hospice-month theme: “We See the Whole You.”
“This phrase goes to the heart of what we do here,” Lewis said. “Our focus is person-centered care. We do whatever makes you comfortable, while honoring your values and goals to enhance quality of life.
“For example, some residents want privacy, some want socialization and most want a combination of both. We understand and act accordingly.”
Currently, three residents are in hospice; on any given day there is a least one.
“Access to hospice services is so important to families,” Lewis commented. “We completely understand that they oftentimes can’t provide these services at home because of work and other obligations. The kids have to get to school and sporting events, and supper needs to be on the table. “Families simply can’t do it all in a 24-hour day. Our door is open to their visits anytime their schedules allow.”
More information
Hospice care provides comfort and support to the person who is nearing the end of life. It focuses on managing symptoms, while improving quality of life.
Palliative care is for those living with a serious illness. It concentrates on relieving symptoms and stress.
Aster Estates contracts with local agencies that provide personnel, equipment and case managers. Chaplains are available for the asking.
Everyone has a private suite at Aster Estates, even though some rooms in the 3,600-square-foot residence are large enough for two.
Most suites in the state-licensed residence have either a full- or half-bath. Medicare covers hospice services and medical equipment, and some medications.
“Overall, Aster Estates offers services for someone who needs just a little help with medications and personal care, palliative and hospice care, and everything in between,” Lewis summarized. “This continuum of care is important because residents can stay here with the people they know and trust.
“The staff is always available to families going through emotional trauma, wondering what’s next. We answer their questions and keep them informed.”
