The Nora E. Larabee Memorial Library announces the successful completion of its 2024 Heritage Trust Fund Grant projects. With this vital funding, the library has completed the restoration of every window – upstairs and down – securing the building’s envelope and preserving its historic charm.

The grant covered 80% of restoration costs for:

• Three basement windows (John Wood)

• Three beveled-glass surrounds around double-hung windows (Scott Hoefer)

• Five stained-glass panels framing Nora’s portrait window (Scott Hoefer)

In addition, a $5,000 grant from the Golden Belt Community Foundation enabled the installation of remote-controlled roller shades on the west windows, reducing afternoon glare and enhancing comfort. Millers of Claflin provided expert guidance and installation.

Outside, the buffalo and blue grama grass is thriving in its second year of establishment. Landscaping was completed with input from local master gardener Jeanie Johnson and the team at Bornholdt Plantland of Hutchinson. Thanks to generous rains and dedicated volunteers – including JC Smith, Bob Minks, Roger Blew, Mary Jo and Todd Taylor, Shelly and Richard Brensing, and Nancy and Rex Hildebrand – the grounds are flourishing. Mowing and maintenance were handled by Roger Blew, Bob Minks, and Richard Brensing, with Richard applying insecticide and fertilizer as needed.

A new flagpole now stands proudly in front of the library, flying the U.S. flag 24/7 in memory of Tim Dye, a beloved patron. A dedication ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4 during Oktoberfest.

Additional improvements include the metal library sign being relocated and visible from Broadway and a new lamppost for safer entry.

Robert Owens, City employees, and Jesse Valadez and crew executed these outdoor upgrades with professionalism and care.

The Preserving Nora’s Legacy Committee will continue to pursue projects as funding allows. Community generosity has been the cornerstone of these efforts.

To support future projects, donors may contribute $100 or more to inscribe a “book” on the Wall of Giving. Contact Gerry Hildebrand at the library or Nancy Hildebrand at nancyhildebrand@rocketmail.com for details.

Library-themed mugs, tote bags, note cards, and mouse pads are available for suggested donations, with all proceeds supporting ongoing improvements.

The library board, staff, and committee extend heartfelt thanks to all who have contributed to preserving this treasured public space for generations to come.
