This painting by Sterling College art professor Sia Joung is entitled “Lyons Salt Plant” and was done with tempera paint in 2020. It is one of 20 pieces on exhibit now at the Sterling College Art Center Gallery at the corner of Eighth Street and Washington in Sterling.

The Sterling College Art Center Gallery is filled with artwork not by students or visiting artists but by the faculty themselves. The Faculty Art Exhibition opened earlier in October and will run through Friday, Oct. 29. The Gallery, at the corner of Washington and Eighth Street in Sterling, is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and the same hours for Homecoming Saturday, Oct. 16.

The Faculty Art Exhibition features a variety of different types of art by Sterling’s art faculty: Libby Reimer, Sia Joung, and Kathleen Schroeder. There will be 20 pieces in the show which will include oil paintings, tempera paintings, vector graphics, as well as mixed media drawings and photography.

“We think it’s important for our students to see our artistry as faculty and for them to see what they’ve been learning in class applied in art works,” said Joung. “Artists need to stay current and continuously work on their art practice. Working as professional artists is one of the essential parts of being a good teacher.”

Joung has been at Sterling for five years, Schroeder for three years, and Reimer for three. All three have shown their works at various exhibits and shows recently. Reimer just completed her MFA show at Fort Hays State University. Joung’s artwork has been shown at Carriage Factory Art Gallery in Newton, Hays Arts Council, and the Hutchinson Art Center while Schroeder has work currently at the Carriage Factory and at Bethel College. Schroeder is currently the president-elect of the Kansas Art Education Association.

There will be a reception honoring the faculty artists and featuring their work from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 15 at the Gallery.
