Gretchen Muriel Scheck

Gretchen Muriel Scheck, 82, passed away Feb. 24, 2021, at Great Bend Health & Rehab. She was born April 11, 1938, at Kansas City, Kan., the daughter of Henry and Mabel (Frisbie) Bradfield. She married Hollis Earl Watkins of Waco, Texas on Jan. 29, 1955, at Great Bend. They were divorced in 1966. She then married Julius Scheck, July 19, 1975, at Great Bend. 

She graduated from Barton County Community College in 1982, with an Associate’s Degree in Nursing. She was employed as a registered nurse at CKMC in ICU, she then went into management as the manager of Patient Planning Services and manager of Central Kansas Health Services. 

Mrs. Scheck was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Great Bend. She served as Republican Precinct Committee 1995 to 1999, and a member of the Great Bend City Council from 1997 to 1999. 

Survivors include, her husband, Julius Scheck of the home; three sons, Kerry Watkins and wife Jan of Ellinwood, Kevin Watkins and wife Pam of Independence, Kan., and Chief Master Sergeant Kemper Watkins, USAF, of Livingston, Tex.; a daughter, Shannon Bolding of Great Bend; three step daughters, Diana Ellis and Donna Frederick of Kansas City, Kan., and Debra Hollis of Topeka. Other survivors include, two brothers, Tommie Long and Larrel Long, both of Redding, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; three step grandchildren; and six step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents. 

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, March 1, 2021, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Pastor Larry Schumacher presiding. Inurnment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Azria Health or Barton County Historical Society, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
