MONARCHS 9, BAT CATS 5 — One night after shutting down the Bat Cats, the Hutchinson Monarchs rolled to a 9-5 victory to secure first place in the Jayhawk Collegiate League.
The Monarchs (9-1, 8-1 Jayhawk) lead the Bat Cats (7-5, 7-3 Jayhawk) by 11/2 games.
Great Bend's Caleb Cowan, Elias Leon, Owen Kaiser and T.J. Shaw doubled. Joey Marker drove in two runs. Peanut Brazzle, Kyle Walker and Leon drove home runs.
The Bat Cats turned a pair of double plays. Several fielders were involved on a double play started by Jackson Legg's groundout and finished by J.J. Spafford getting thrown out at home. Second baseman Joey Marker and shortstop T.J. Shaw turned a seventh-inning double play.
Hutchinson's Jackson Legg homered and drove home four runs. A.J. Mustow doubled, tripled an drove home three runs. Bat Cat pitchers walked five batters and hit five batters, handing the Monarchs 10 baserunners.
Legg's single scored Herrmann and Mustow's double scored Legg and Blake Bradford for a 3-0 lead. Carson Umphres scored on a Marker's groundout and Cowan scored on Walker's fifth-inning double for a 3-2 score.
Legg's 2-run fifth-inning homer scored Senstock for a 5-2 lead. Herrmann scored on Senstock's sixth-inning fly ball for a 6-2 lead.
Umphres scored on Brazzle's seventh-inning single for a 6-3 score. Three hit batters and two walks gift wrapped a 3-run Monarch eight-inning. Grimes scored on a wild pitch. Herrmann scored on a hit batter. Spafford scored on a groundout for a 9-3 lead.
Cowan scored on Marker's groundout and Brazzle scored on a Leon ninth-inning single to close out the scoring.
MONARCHS 2, BAT CATS 1 —The Hutchinson Monarchs edged the Great Bend Bat Cats 2-1 in Friday's classic battle for first place.
Hutchinson spoiled 71/3 shutout innings by Bat Cats starter Carson Umphres, then stranded the tying and go-ahead base runners in the final two innings.
Umphres threw brilliantly in a 113-pitch outing, but departed after Keegan Demmer singled and A.J. Mustow walked. Umphres' shutout gem was erased in three pitches.
Hutchinson's Jeter Worthley singled off Bat Cats reliever Tyler Stuhlsatz to drive home Demmer. Tyson Vassart singled home Mustow on the next pitch for a 2-0 lead.
Great Bend rallied in the final two innings.
Luke Nohinek singled in Tyler Clementz. Caleb Cowan and Nohinek were stranded on base. Peanut Brazzle struck out and Kyle Walker flied out against reliever Russell Copous.
Bat Cat T.J. Shaw singled and Clementz reached on a ninth-inning error. Copus retired Andrugh Yee on a fly ball out to preserve the victory.
The Bat Cats grounded into a trio of double plays. Elias Leon was retired on a 3-1-6 first-inning twin killing. Clementz was retired on a 6-4-3 second-inning double play. Leon grounded into a 6-3 fourth-inning double play.
Great Bend's defense was highlighted by a 4-6-3 double play by second baseman Tony Moore and shortstop Clementz in the sixth inning. Umphres ended the seventh inning with a bare-handed grab of Tyler Mitchell's groundball.
