No. 2 Cougars sweep Red Ravens

COFFEYVILLE – No. 2 ranked Barton Community College roared to an 18-point edge and coasted past Coffeyville Community College 98-87 in Saturday’s Jayhawk Conference basketball showdown.

Barton (24-1, 19-1 Jayhawk) has won a school record 16 consecutive league games while moving two games ahead of Cowley (22-4, 17-3 Jayhawk)

The Cougars' magic number to clinch a trip to the NJCAA Tournament is a combination of three wins/or losses by Cowley/Hutchinson. The Red Ravens drop to 10-15, 6-13 Jayhawk.

Barton plays Garden City at home Saturday.

Fawaz Surakat scored a career high 10 points to lead Barton's 25-7 edge in bench production. Keandre Kindell added seven, Christian Bowen-Webb five and Brent Moss scoring three.

Going blow for blow through the opening 10-minutes, the Cougars pieced together a 13-0 run sparked in the midst of Surakat's personal 6-0 stretch building up a nine-point lead that would eventually settle for a 49-39 halftime lead.

Stretching the lead to as many as 13 early in the second half, Barton would see the lead evaporate with the Red Ravens rattling off eight straight giving Coffeyville a 58-57 lead.

The Cougars outscored the Red Ravens 21-2 behind four long distance splashes from Malith for a 78-60 lead.

Barton shot 48% and the Red Ravens 49%. The Red Ravens shot a sizzling 56% (14-of-25) while the Cougars rang in 41.7% (10-of-24) from 3-point range.
