CENTRAL PLAINS 40, SYLVAN-LUCAS 38
CLAFLIN — The Central Plains Oilers rallied from 24-12 deficit for a thrilling 40-38 overtime victory over Sylvan-Lucas in Thursday's 8-Man Division 1 football playoffs. The Oilers (7-2) play Chase County (6-3) in next week's second round.
Oiler tailback Eli Hurley scored the tying 1-yard touchdown and flattened Mustang defender Connor Charvat to free Joel Schreiber on the game-winning 2-pointer. Mustang Zayne Maupin scored his fifth touchdown in overtime for a 38-32 lead. Oiler Peyton Dody tackled Charvat to stop the 2-point conversion.
Hurley scored three touchdowns and rushed for 77 yards. Schreiber rushed for 132 yards, scored two touchdowns and a pair of 2-point conversions.
Mustang back Zayne Maupin rushed for three touchdowns on runs of 4, 5 and 19 yards. He scored on 8- and 32-yard passing touchdowns from quarterback Carter Johnson. The Oilers were thankful Maupin lined up at end on Charvat's 2-point overtime attempt.
The Mustangs led 24-12 when Maupin scored on a 9-yard touchdown pass. But the Oilers rallied with two Hurley touchdowns and a Schreiber score for a 32-24 lead. Maupin's touchdown reception and Charvat's 2-point conversion tied it 32-32.
Oiler Peyton Dody preserved a 32-32 tie by defending Maupin in the endzone on a second-and-goal pass at the Oiler 5-yard line on the final play of regulation.
