Cardinal softball wins pair

HOISINGTON — A grand slam homer by Marly Brewer and eight total RBIs sparked the Hoisington/Central Plains softball  team to a 14-4 and 14-6 doubleheader sweep over Russell/Victoria in Tuesday's season opener. The Cardinals (2-0) play at Ellinwood Friday.

CARDINALS 14, RUSSELL 4 (G1) — Brewer's third-inning homer scored Kelsi Maier, Claire Crutcher and Kylie Kempke for a 10-0 lead. Ellie Crawford drilled a 3-run homer for a 13-4 lead.

Reese Aylward drove in two runs. Crutcher, Gabby Reif and Maier also drove in runs.

Crawford (1-0) struck out eight batters in three innings.

Russell's  Jonae Radke tripled and drove in two runs. 

CARDINALS 14, RUSSELL 6 (G2) —Hoisington broke the game open with a 6-run third inning and 4-runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Brewer's 4-RBI game sparked the Cardinals with two hits and two runs scored. Kylie Kempke drove home three runs with three hits. Mackenzie Foulger drove in three runs with three hits. Alyward drove in a run. Cardinal Brynn Tarlton (1-0) struck out seven batters in five innings.

Russell's Maddie Middleton drove in two runs and Radke and Daryss Barrera each drove in a run.
