Iron-man Donovan sparks Cardinals' sweep

Hoisington pitcher Braxton Donovan achieved a rare double dip throwing both games in a 17-2 and 15-0 baseball doubleheader sweep over Ellinwood Thursday.

HOISINGTON — Hoisington pitcher Braxton Donovan led a dominating baseball sweep of 2A Ellinwood — 17-2 and 15-0. Donovan followed a nifty 54-pitch outing with a more efficient 30-pitch nightcap.

The Cardinals (9-3) play Halstead Tuesday at home. Ellinwood (1-9) plays Russell April 26.

HOISINGTON 17, ELLINWOOD 2 (G1) — Hoisington's Derek Boxberger led a 10-hit attack with three RBIs. The Cardinals scored 17 runs in three at-bats for a 15-run rule victory.

Boxberger doubled home Trey Byers and Avery Brewer and Myles Menges, Trey Byers and Quentin Boxberger added RBIs in a seven-run first inning.

Ellinwood's Gage Hosman scored on a second-inning wild pitch. Derek Boxberger added an RBI single. Menges scored on an error and Jacob Specht scored on a passed ball for a 10-1 lead.

Ellinwood's Trey Schofield scored on Ryan Niles' third-inning groundout for a 10-2 score.  

In a seven-run third inning, Specht's single scored Jerred Bieberle and Donovan. Byers doubled home Menges and Specht. Byers scored on an error. Avery Brewer scored on a passed ball. Hunter Hanzlick scored on an error for a 15-run victory.  

HOISINGTON 15, ELLINWOOD 0 (G2) — Myles Menges drilled a three-run first inning homer and drove home six runs with a two-run double and a groundball. Cardinal pitcher Braxton Donovan threw a one-hit shutout over three innings.

Quentin Boxberger scored on Menges' groundball. Donovan scored on a wild pitch. Menges scored on Specht's sacrifice fly. Byers scored on an error for an 8-0 lead after two innings.

 The Cardinals scored seven third-inning runs for a 15-0 win. Menges' double scored Quentin Boxberger and Bieberle. Brewer hit a sacrifice fly. Hunter Hanzlick singled home Specht and Byers to end the game.
