Chiefs sweep Kinsley, throw no-hitter

KINSLEY — A trio of Great Bend Chief pitchers combined for a no-hitter in the opening victory in a doubleheader baseball sweep over the Kinsley Southwest Sox 11-1 and 9-3 Wednesday. 

Starter Colin Hall (4-2) struck out seven batters in three innings and relievers Layton Holden and Calan Haberman each struck out the side.

The Chiefs (19-13) play Hoisington at 6 p.m. Sunday in a home doubleheader. Great Bend will start AAA zone play July 20 at the Great Bend Sports Complex.

CHIEFS 11, KINSLEY 1 (G1) — Chiefs Townshend Kurth and Carson Smith each drove home two runs. The Chiefs scored seven unearned runs.

Kurth singled home Haberman and Carson Smith singled home Kurth for a 2-0 lead. Kinsley’s Bryce Herrmann scored on a first-inning error. 

Haberman singled home Christian Zahnter in the second inning. Carson Smith scored on a hit batter and Hall scored  Zahnter’s third-inning sacrifce fly. Alex Schremmer scored on Carson Smith’s fourth-inning single.

Kurth singled home Schremmer in a five-run fifth inning. Riley Smith, Nahum Olivas, Jayce Kohls and Kurth wscored on errors as Kinsley’s defense misfired. 

Kinsley’s batters struck out 13 times. Kellen Herrmann and Dylon Haselhorst grounded out for Kinsley’s only two balls put into play.

CHIEFS 9, KINSLEY 3 (G2) — Haberman and Schremmer each drove in two runs to spark a 10-hit attack. Kurth (5-4) earned the victory and struck out six batters. The Chiefs overcame six errors that gave Kinsley three unearned runs.

Riley Smith doubled home Hall in the second inning. Holden doubled home Zahnter, Olivas and Holden scored on errors and Joey Soupiset scored in a four-run fourth inning.

Schremmer’s two-run single scored Soupiset and Haberman in a four-run sixth inning. Kohls and Schremmer scored on passed balls.    

Kinsley's Kellen Herrmann scored two runs and Bryce Herrman scored one run on Chiefs’ errors. Daniel Fagan singled for Kinsley's lone base hit.
