ABILENE — Ellinwood's Reagan Wirtz captured a pair of gold medals in the 100 meters (12.43) and long jump (17-83/4) to spark the Eagles at Friday's Abilene track meet.
Eleanor Joiner ran a career-best 800-meter runner-up time (2:24.02) and also finished runner-up in the 1,600 meters (5:33.05).
Landon Simpson placed runner-up in the long jump (20-101/2).
"The Ellinwood track and field teams rose to the occasion Friday," said Ellinwood coach Jeff Zook. "The meet served as a crucial mid-season gut check. Ellinwood responded stacking up personal records, clutch performances, and proving they belong.
The Eagle girls placed fourth and Ellinwood's boys placed ninth in the 13-team field with 3A and 5A high schools.
"The Lady Eagles had a terrific showing, charging to fourth-place behind only Hays, Clay Center and Wamego," he said. "The Eagle boys battled with heart to tie Abilene for ninth place."
Ellinwood travels to Greensburg next week before Ellinwood competes at home May 9.
"We'll return home to compete in front of our hometown crowd May 9," Zook said. "Let’s pack the stands and fill the track with Eagle pride as these athletes continue their incredible season."
