Great Bend's Sadie Spray takes it hard to the basket against two Dodge City players with Panther Paige Thexton trailing.

DODGE CITY — The Great Bend Middle School eighth-grade girls basketball teams sped past Dodge City Comanche in their season basketball openers.

GBMS GIRLS A TEAM — The GBMS girls roared to a 16-0 first-quarter lead. They scored nine points in the third quarter and 14 points in the third period en route to a 41-5 victory over Dodge City Comanche.

“We did the things I wanted the first game,” said coach Kyle Jeffrey. “Our fullcourt pressure was more than Comanche could handle.  Sadie Spray, Macy Nachtigal, and Makenzie Premer made it difficult for our opponents to catch the ball cleanly. We had them so frustrated, that when they would catch the ball they couldn’t wait to get rid of it.”

Spray and Emilee Hall finished the game with 12 points each followed by Nachtigal with eight points. Also scoring were Paige Thexton (4), Addy Nicholson (2), Ava Gregg (2) and Annah Baldwin (1).

GBMS GIRLS B TEAM — The GBMS girls eighth-grade B team rolled past Dodge City Comanche 30-4 Thursday.

GBMS shut out Dodge City in three of the fourth quarters.

Leading the scoring was Maleigha Ribordy with 11 points followed by Ashton McMillen and Addy Nicholson with 6 points each. Samantha Meyers (3)  Taylour Yoder (2) and Aniya Jones (2) rounded out the scoring.

“The girls came out and played as a team with strong defense and good ball movement,” said coach Courtney Maska. “We need to continue to work on running plays. For their first game, I was happy with their performance.”
