GARDNER — Great Bend's all-state Carson Umphres earned a complete game pitching victory, a save and missed a chance to decide the third baseball game at Gardner's round-robin baseball quadrangular.
No. 4 ranked 5A Great Bend improves to 13-4.
PANTHERS 2, GARDNER-EDGERTON 1 — Umphres was in total command with five strikeouts and no earned runs in a crisp 83-pitch outing.
Trenton Kern's sixth-inning single scored Umphres and Minton for the tying and winning runs. Umphres reached on an error and Minton walked. Ian Premer walked to load the bases.
Umphres yielded an unearned first-inning run. Gardner's Baylor Vesey scored on a 2-out error after a pair of singles.
ST. THOMAS AQUINAS 2, PANTHERS 0 — Great Bend's best power hitter Umphres was up with the tying runner on base against No. 1 ranked 5A St. Thomas Aquinas.
The comeback from a 2-0 deficit fizzled when Umphres grounded into a game-ending double play against Aquinas pitcher Oscar Green.
Defending 5A state champion Aquinas improves to 14-3.
Great Bend pitcher Slade Mohr threw five shutout innings to match Aquinas starter James Forgy.
Umphres singled and Daxton Minton walked in the third inning when Ian Premer lined out to center.
Mohr stranded Will Ray after a second inning double.
Aquinas swung the momentum with a pair of bunt singles in a 2-run sixth inning. Henry Goodwin singled and raced to third base on Nic Sabers' bunt single. Goodwin scored on Westin Boyle's sacrifice fly. Pinch runner Jett Wood scored on Brady Stewart's successful bunt single for a 2-0 lead.
Hunter Herrman walked and Mohr singled to give the Panthers a chance. Aquinas third baseman Goodman turned Umphres' groundball into a game-ending double play.
PANTHERS 5, LEE'S SUMMIT, MO. 4 — Great Bend scrambled to score five runs on two hits thanks to eight walks issued by Lee's Summit's pitchers. Herrman earned the victory. Umphres struck out two batters to earn a save.
The Broncos (12-12) led 2-0 on Troy Paulding's single that scored Henry Cole and Brandon Hill. Nick Atherton scored on a bases-loaded walk for a 3-0 lead.
Four walks to a 3-run Panther second inning. Koehn Ribordy scored on a passed ball. Umphres singled home Mohr and Jace Schartz for a 3-3 tie. Minton's fourth-inning single scored pinch runner Eli Soupiset and Schartz.
John Schmitt scored on Paulding's sixth-inning groundout.
