Panther softball dethrones defending champions

HAYS — Great Bend swept defending Western Athletic Conference Hays High 13-7 Monday to eliminate the Indians Monday.

DeShawnna Bryant and Alyssa McCauley homered. McCauley and Camdyn Post each drove home three runs.

The Panthers (14-4, 9-0 WC) outscored the Indians 34-12 in three wins. Great Bend scored 18 runs against Hays All-WAC pitcher Riley Dreher (4-4).

Great Bend pitcher Chayla Prendergast yielded two earned runs. Prendergast (9-2, 2.92 ERA) has permitted 30 earned runs in 72 innings.

The Panthers roared to a 13-2 lead.

Behr scored on an error on Bryant's steal and Callie Umphres singled in Bryant. McCauley doubled home Umphres for  3-0 first-inning lead.

Post's single scored Denver Ringo and Braelyn Turner to ignite  5-run second inning. Katherine Mazouch scored on a groundout. Post scored on Bryant's double. Bryant scored on McCauley's single for an 8-0 lead.

Hays answered with Avery Solida's homer and Katie Klein scored on a second-inning groundout.

The Panthers scored five more runs. Mazouch scored on a third-inning groundout after tripling home Ringo. Bryant hammered a fourth-inning homer. McCauley homered and Ava Carter scored on a Prendergast seventh-inning single for a 13-2 lead.

The Indians scored five unearned runs following three Panther errors and a trio of walks. Klein hit a 2-run single and Alyse Zimmerman added an RBI single.
