A six-man road trip to remember

SPORTS IN KANSAS

CHETOPA — Pawnee Heights left Rozel at 9 a.m. for the nearly five-hour drive to Chetopa.

The Tigers earned a 38-20 win on the road, then began the long ride home, with an expected arrival around 3 a.m. Saturday. Pawnee Heights entered with 2-6 record while Chetopa was 4-3.

Chetopa led 14-6, but the Tigers would not be denied. They were playing in the memory of a teammate.

The Tigers, under head coach Ty Josefiak, advance to take on undefeated Tescott next week in the second round of the 6-man state playoffs.

The Tigers brought the jersey of teammate Rylan Reece with them. Rylan died earlier this year on the first week of practice, and after the game, the players gathered with his jersey, a way to keep their teammate close as they shared the night’s win.

It was 301 miles each way. A long day on the road, and a victory the Pawnee Heights Tigers will remember.
