ELLINWOOD — State-ranked Russell outlasted Ellinwood's ace pitcher Cohen Gunn 2-1 and swept the Eagles' baseball team 11--1.

Russell (12-0) is ranked seventh in Class 3A. Ellinwood drops to 6-6.

RUSSELL 2, ELLINWOOD 1 (G1) — Russell scored a pair of sixth-inning runs to spoil Cohen Gunn's perfect pitching season, who struck out 10 batters.

Gunn (3-1, 0.28 ERA) has 54 strikeouts in 242/3 innings, an average of 15 strikeouts every 7 innings.

Ellinwood's Drake Hosman (.306) reached base on an error and scored a fifth-inning run on Trace Tudor's groundout. Gunn (.526), Tudor (.308) and Banks Jacobs (.577) singled. Eagle batters struck out 17 times.

Russell's Sam Thielen singled and scored on a Max Evans double. Evans scored on an error. Evans (1-0, 0.82 ERA) struck out 15 batters.
