Prehistoric fun at the library

Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library! It’s week three of summer programming at the library, and we have just as much as always to keep you busy. To start off we have our regular Genealogy Thursday today, June 18, at 11 a.m. Then at 5:30 p.m. we have this month’s Teen Manga & Anime Club. For June’s meeting, we’ll be covering “Haikyu!!” by Haruichi Furudate. After the discussion, we’ll play some summer festival games! Copies of July’s title, “My Adventures with Superman” by Tomo Josie Campbell and Pablo M. Collar, will be available for checkout. If you’re interested in checking out the digital copy, please bring your library card and your smart device of choice so we can get you set up with hoopla, one of our digital lending services.

Friday is Juneteenth, Freedom Day, when we celebrate the day enslaved Texans finally learned they were free more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. If you’re interested in learning more about this important day in history, you can find books about Juneteenth here at the library. We will also be celebrating local history as the theme of our next installment of our Adult Show & Tell series, Fridays at 10:30 a.m. Dust off your heirlooms and dig out your trinkets! We can’t wait to hear everyone’s stories this summer, featuring a different theme each week. Note: Please do not bring in any living creatures. Staff will not be available to help move items.

Are you a teen looking for an afternoon of fun this weekend? Check out the first of our Summer D&D One-Shot Adventures this Saturday from 12:30-4:45 p.m. Although our table is full, those who don’t have a spot as a player are welcome to come watch as part of the audience (no registration required)!

Monday marks the start of our Time Travel Escape Puzzle. The library has been sent back to prehistoric times, and we need your help! Scour the building for clues to repair our busted time machine and return us to the present. Stop by the Front Desk to get started. This puzzle will be available during library hours from June 22 through July 11.

On Monday at 7 p.m., hold onto your butts and get ready for a book club 65 million years in the making! Our Jurassic Book to Reel Club will be meeting to discuss “Jurassic Park” by Michael Crichton, the classic thriller that started it all. Join us the following Friday, June 26, at 7 p.m. for a watch party of the film. Stay after the credits for a short discussion about the differences between the movie and the novel. Copies of the book are still available for checkout at the front desk.

Little learners, join us at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday for Story Time! Those a bit too old for Story Time but not old enough to attend teen events can check out Tween Scene at 10:30 a.m. This week, try out a mini version of our Teen Manga & Anime Club! Visit the Circulation Desk to check out a copy of “Pokémon Adventures (Gold & Silver)” to read before we meet to watch an episode of the anime, talk about the show and the book, and play the card game on June 23.

For our next Wonderful Wednesday for all ages at 10:30 a.m., we are joined by talented songwriter and musician Thad Beach. He’s bringing “A Prehistoric Sound Adventure,” a roaring good musical performance for all ages with original songs, traditional tunes, and a demonstration of instruments, including the washboard, ukulele, jaw harp, harmonica, and guitar. Sing, stomp, rumble, and roar with Pteranodon and Mosasaur. Catch the cretaceous can band, bop with the beat of the brontosaurus bucket bass, and tune into the Triassic triangle trio!

On Thursday, June 25, we have even more prehistoric fun in store at Dry Lake Brewing with Jurassic Park Trivia. We have some amazing prizes for this summer trivia, so if you are a Jurassic Park fan or just love dinos, this is one you won’t want to miss! If you want to get a leg up on the competition, I recommend picking up a copy of the book by Michael Crichton and joining us for the aforementioned Jurassic Book to Reel Club. While the majority of the trivia night questions will be about the first movie, some book-related questions will be sprinkled in as well.
