On Sunday, May 3, the Rice County Sheriff’s Office responded to a three-vehicle crash at 10:39 a.m. in the area of mile marker 117 on K-14, approximately 3 miles south of Sterling.

Multiple motorists were involved, and several individuals were transported to area hospitals by emergency services for treatment.

The crash was investigated by the Kansas Highway Patrol, which later posted details:

A 2015 Honda Accord driven by Kristjan N. Goosby, age 19, from Lawrenceville, Georgia, was southbound on K-14 and lost control while passing another vehicle. The Honda went into a driver-side broadside skid in the northbound lane and was struck by a 2017 Toyota Highlander driven by Shela F. Link, 71, of Hutchinson. The Honda then spun into the southbound lane and was struck by a 2007 Ford F-250 pickup as the driver, Jonathan W. Bishop, 40, of Hutchinson, tried to avoid the collision.

Goosby was transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center with suspected serious injuries.

Link and her passenger, 72-year-old Randall L. Link, were taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center with suspected minor injuries.

Bishop had no apparent injuries. All of the drivers were wearing seat belts.

Bishop had three passengers, all from Hutchinson. A 7-year-old male was wearing a seat belt and had no apparent injuries. Two occupants, ages 45 and 15, who were not wearing seat belts were taken to Hutch Medical Center with suspected minor injuries.

The Rice County Sheriff’s Office extended thanks to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Sterling Fire Department, Rice County Emergency Services, Reno County Emergency Services, Reno County Sheriff’s Office, and the Kansas Department of Transportation for their assistance and coordinated response.
