OSBORNE — Underdog Sylvan-Lucas built a 39-34 lead on the Central Plains boys to build momentum in Friday's Osborne 1A Division 1 basketball substate.

But the Oilers' tandem of Brodie Crites and Camdyn Stiles rode to the rescue combining for 22 fourth-quarter points for a comeback 56-52 victory over the Mustangs.

"Our guys stayed calm and got ready to roll for the next possession," said Oiler coach Michael Ryan. "We made enough plays to get the job done. It's always a battle with Sylvan. They easily could've beaten us."

It could've been 41-34, but Carter Johnson missed a breakaway layup off a steal and Layne Maupin missed the rebound shot to end the third quarter. The Mustangs trailed 30-19 but roared ahead 39-34 on a stunning 20-4 scoring burst keyed by superb execution.

"They made shots and our shots weren't going in. That's basketball," said Ryan. "Outside of rebounding, we did a good job defensively."

Stiles hit the game's biggest shot with a go-ahead 3-pointer for a 52-51 lead. Carter Johnson missed a 3-pointer and a 2-pointer and Lane Brokes missed a follow shot that would've given the Mustangs the lead with 27 seconds left.

Crites converted four clinching free throws. Crites shook off aggressive Mustang defense with 26 points, 13 in the fourth quarter. Stiles converted 6 of 18 3-pointers for 18 points.

"When they helped inside, our guys kicked it outside to Camdyn," Ryan said.

Carter Johnson scored 17 points off 6 of 21 shooting and 6-foot-7 Brokes added 12 on 5 of 16 shooting.

The Oilers (23-2) will play Canton-Galva (16-8) at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Salina. The Oilers placed fourth last year. They make their sixth state trip with state crowns in 2018 and 2019.

"We've got a veteran group that's been in these situations," Ryan said. "They fight through it and battle."
