Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library! We have plenty to do this week so we will jump right in. Starting with today, Sept. 17, we have our next Teen Manga & Anime Club meeting. For September, we’re covering “Pokémon Adventures” by Hidenori Kusaka. “Red doesn’t just want to train Pokémon, he wants to be their friend too. Bulbasaur and Poliwhirl seem game, but independent Pikachu won’t be so easy to win over! And watch out for Team Rocket, Red ... They only want to be your enemy (Goodreads)!”
Afterwards, we’ll learn to play the card game and have a mini tournament! Copies of October’s title, “Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun” by AidaIro, will be available for pickup.
Saturday is our next History Book Club meeting. This month we are discussing “Wolves at the Door: The True Story of America’s Greatest Female Spy” by Judith Pearson.
“The Gestapo considered her so dangerous, they put a price on her head, forcing her to escape over the Pyrenees mountains – and on an artificial leg. When she got to England, she was reassigned to France, disguised as an old peasant woman. Next Tuesday, Sept. 22, we have Early Literacy Story Time at 10:30 a.m. This is an active time for little learners ages 0-5 featuring early literacy skills, picture books, finger plays, songs, rhymes, music, art, and movement.
Following that is CreativiTeens starting at 4 pm. Get creative in the Teen Spot as we turn paper pulp and paint into 3D pieces of art!
Wednesday, Sept. 23, is our next help hour for our Crafty Cross Stitch Club. We have a few spots left if any tweens or teens want to join, no experience necessary! This fall we are making Pusheen, the Internet’s adorable chubby tabby who has warmed the hearts of millions with her animated GIFs and comics. This all-in-one kit includes everything you need to create cute embroidered designs of everyone’s favorite lazy, lovable feline. We only have a few spots left for grades 3-12, so this will be a first come first, served event for those not already registered.
On Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m., we have our first TechConnect class. We are partnering with Cisco Net Academy to bring these classes to our patrons. This is a digital literacy training program designed to strengthen technology access and skills across communities in Kansas.
Funded through the Kansas Office of Broadband Development as part of the DOCK initiative, TechConnect Kansas was created to address the growing need for digital literacy education – particularly in underserved areas. The program brings together WSU Tech IT students and public libraries to expand access to essential technology training and resources. As recipients of this grant, we are excited to bring this program to the Great Bend Community! This first class will cover AI. Chatbots are revolutionizing the way we work and learn. Millions of people worldwide use them to simplify tasks like homework and ideating, writing, and editing. They can even offer career advice! This beginner-friendly course is designed to help you understand AI with hands-on practice identifying and prompting AI-generated content.
Lastly, Thursday, Sept. 24, is our next trivia night at Dry Lake. This month, we are celebrating National Comic Book Day with DC and Marvel Trivia. How well do you know characters like Batman and Sue Storm? Show off your comic book prowess and win fabulous prizes, including free beer!
