Sixteen members of Stafford County 4-H represented the 21 Central District at the recent 4-H Livestock Sweepstakes Contest in Manhattan held Aug. 22-23. This sweepstakes weekend brings 4-Hers (ages 9-19) from all over the state to compete in Livestock Judging, Livestock Skillathon activities, Meats Judging and Livestock Quiz Bowl.
For nine of these 4-Hers from 21 Central District, this was their first time to compete in the state contest, indicating that the future is very bright for this team.
Results
Quiz Bowl: The varsity livestock quiz bowl team of Garrett Dunn, Jayce Feril, Lainey Peterson and Mara Feril placed overall 10th in the qualifying exam, allowing them to compete in the head to head competition as part of the 12 team bracket. Garrett Dunn was ranked 10th highest individual in this qualifying exam, while Lainey Peterson ranked 12th place overall.
The junior varsity team of Liddy Axman, Olivia Dick, Luke Petty and Makayla Wolff ranked 20th.
Livestock Skillathon: Over 200 individuals and 33 teams competed in the contest to identify livestock breeds, animal feeds, livestock equipment, retail meat ID, wool judging, hay judging, proper quality assurance and general livestock knowledge exam.
Fifteen 4-Hers from the 21 Central District competed. Out of 33 teams, the varsity team placed 9th and junior varsity team placed 26th.
Overall placings in the top 100:
Mara Feril - 28th; Lainey Peterson - 34th; Makayla Wolff - 57th; Jayce Feril - 61st; Kenyon Barney - 79th; and Easton Alpers - 85th
Other participants were Olivia Dick, Liddy Axman, Luke Petty, Willa Peterson, Lily Barney, Makenzie Kraushaar, Gracen Petty, Brecken Alpers, and Maris Axman
The State 4-H Meats Judging Contest: Consisted of six placing classes, three sets of reasons for the seniors or two sets of questions for the intermediates and 30 retail ID cuts.
The 21 Central District Senior team (for those aged 14-19): Made up of Easton Alpers, Jayce Feril, Makenzie Kraushaar and Lainey Peterson, placed overall 9th out of 15 teams. This team also was 12th in placings, 11th in reasons and 8th in Retail ID.
Overall results: Lainey Peterson 25th; Easton Alpers – 33rd; Jayce Feril – 37th; Makenzie Kraushaar – 71st
The 21 Central District Intermediate Meats Judging team (for those aged 9-13): Eleven 4-Hers from 21 Central District competed in this event.
Team 1 composed of Mara Feril, Kenyon Barney, Liddy Axman, Olivia Dick placed 2nd overall (3rd in placings, 3rd in questions, 2nd in Retail ID)
Overall placings were as follows: Mara Feril – 5th; Kenyon Barney – 10th; Liddy Axman – 11th; Olivia Dick – 14th overall.
Team 2 was composed of Makayla Wolff, Luke Petty, Willa Peterson, Brecken Alpers. This team placed 4th overall, (2nd in placings, 2nd in questions, 4th in Retail ID.)
Overall placings were as follows: Makayla Wolff – 12th overall; Luke Petty – 18th; Willa Peterson – 19th; Brecken Alpers – 20th; Lily Barney – 22nd; Maris Axman – 31st; Gracen Petty – 41st.
