Superintendent Khris Thexton and the Great Bend USD 428 Board of Education showed appreciation for volunteers in the district learning centers during Monday’s school board meeting.

“USD 428 appreciates the many volunteers who generously assist in various school capacities,” Thexton said. “Volunteers provide many hours each week across the district, with many additional hours for special events. USD 428 acknowledges the importance of all who volunteer their time for the benefit of students.”

Unfinished business included the second reading of the K-12 science curriculum adoption that was presented in March.

Another curriculum adoption was discussed under new business, where Director of Teaching and Learning JoAnn Blevins provided details regarding a five-year contract with Ramsey Education for Consumer Math.

New business also included a review of this year’s school calendar and drafts under consideration for next year’s calendar.

The first reading of next year’s student handbooks, teacher handbooks, and activities and athletics handbook were also presented.

Membership in the Kansas Association of School Boards and membership in the KASB Legal Assistance Fund were renewed for $14,534. The district has used KASB services to assist in policy development, personnel, negotiations, school improvement and legal services. The KASB membership was $11,784, which is $50.49 more than last year. The legal assistance fund membership was $2,750, the same as last year.

Purchases on the agenda were a 72-inch commercial mower to replace a 2016 model; replacement of two aging special education buses; flooring supplies for the GBHS and GBMS band rooms; and proposals to tear out and replace the broken curb and gutter areas at Eisenhower Elementary School.
