STAFFORD — According to: “The Meaning of Your Life: Finding Purpose in an Age of Emptiness” by Arthur C. Brooks on CBS News Sunday Morning, boredom has almost been eliminated! How can that be? Easy accessibility to the internet through smart phones. This is a good thing. Right?

Not necessarily so. Brain science has discovered, when you are bored your brain activates a certain portion of your brain that creates inspiration.

The role of boredom

Mr. Brooks explains that eliminating boredom through constant phone use has shut down the brain’s “Default Mode

Network,” which is crucial for abstract thinking and contemplating life’s meaning. This has caused a re-wiring of our brain that leads to a lack of purpose and a feeling of emptiness. How can we fix this? The book has a six step- plan that I’m interested in reading.

The book is coming out at the end of March and we will be adding it to our collection as soon as possible.

I have been looking forward to this week and learning to Strip Quilt. It looks like an easy way to make beautiful quilts. I’m thinking of starting out small with a cushion cover for my sofa. There are still a few spots left to watch this demonstration at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday March 24 and see if quilting is something that will enhance your life. RSVP to 620-234-5762. The cost is $5.

Another exciting opportunity this week is Recently Read, meeting Tuesday night at 5:30. Come be with this fun group.

Now is the time to think about flowers. Do you have the itch to start planting? Find out what you need to know. Come to a meeting with K-State Horticulturalist Baley Doggett and learn about how to grow them, at 2:30 p.m. March 31. Then get your spring vibe going by arranging flowers. RSVP by the 27th so we know how many flowers to order. The meeting is free or the cost is $25 if you want to arrange flowers.
