County Commission prepares for first meeting of 2026

The Barton County Commission will hold its first meeting for the new year at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, at the courthouse. Citizens may also view the meeting through Microsoft Teams at https://bit.ly/3KBEylq. To participate in the discussion of any item, call 620-793-1800 for instructions. Commission meetings are then posted on the video-sharing website YouTube; search for Barton County Commission.

Although Tuesday is the regular meeting day for the commissioners, the following week’s meeting will take place on Monday, Jan. 12. Per Kansas statutes, the organization meeting for counties is held on the second Monday of the year.

Items on the Jan. 6 agenda include:

• a request from the County Clerk’s office for approval of added/abated/escape/refunded taxes

• appointing Brian Miller to the Beaver Township Board, replacing Trustee Jennifer Steinert, who resigned effective Dec. 31, 2025

• designating official depositories for county funds

• continuing to contract with Elle Hutchinson as the county’s media consultant

• renewing memberships that include the National Association of Counties for $510, Kansas Legislative Policy Group for $6,274, and League of Kansas Municipalities, and considering membership in the Kansas Natural Resource Coalition.

The following appointments have been scheduled:

9:45 a.m. or following the close of the agenda meeting - planning session with media consultant

10 a.m. - regular business discussion with County Administrator Matt Patzner

10:15 a.m. - discussion with County Appraiser Wendy Prosser on a bulk mailing request for proposals (RFP)

10:30 a.m. - discussion with Solid Waste Director Jennifer Hamby on a dirt purchase from Oneok

10:45 a.m. - program update with Central Kansas Community Corrections Director Brooke Haulmark

11:15 a.m. - program update with Christy Crews (rescheduled from Dec. 30)

“The County Edition” is broadcast at 11:05 a.m. Thursdays on KVGB-AM. Sheriff Brian Bellendir is scheduled for the Jan. 8 program.
