Local law enforcement officers responded to an “active threat” at Great Bend High School approximately 45 minutes before noon Wednesday. The lockdown was intended to be a planned drill in coordination with local law enforcement and K-9 units during a regularly scheduled visit.
The high school was placed on lockdown at approximately 11:15 a.m. However, during the drill, a threatening telephone call was placed to GBHS, which forced the lockdown to be extended as officers sought an adult female suspect.
Stafford County law enforcement officers were also at the scene, as were Barton County Sheriff’s Office deputies and multiple K-9 units.
USD 428 school board members were also expected to meet at GBHS over the noon hour. The doors reopened at noon and the meeting took place as scheduled.
Andrea Bauer, USD 428 public information officer, released a statement regarding the incident after its resolution at approximately 12:45 p.m. Wednesday:
“This morning, Great Bend High School (GBHS) conducted a planned lockdown drill in coordination with local law enforcement and their K-9 unit during a regularly scheduled visit.
“During this time, GBHS received a threatening phone call, prompting an extended lockdown while law enforcement assessed the situation. Due to their presence on the premises, officers were immediately available to investigate. After a thorough review, the threat was determined to be non-credible. The lockdown was lifted, and normal operations resumed.
“There was no immediate danger to students or staff,” the release continued. “GBHS remains committed to maintaining a safe and secure learning environment, and we appreciate the swift response of local law enforcement and the cooperation of our students and staff.”
