Green thumbs prepare for gardening season
seed swap 2025

It’s time to start thinking about gardening season and the Barton County Conservation District and Barton County Master Gardeners helped get things started on Saturday with a Seed Swap at the Great Bend Public Library.

Veronica Coons, district manager of the Conservation District, said 50 people stopped by the library to pick up some free garden seeds or swap seeds they have saved and to pick up tips from Master Gardeners.

For those wanting to learn how to grow their best garden ever – even if it’s their first, a free series of classes, “Spring Gardening Basics,” starts March 22 and meets for six Saturdays from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the library. It is hosted by the K-State Research and Extension Master Gardeners and the Conservation District. Drop-ins are welcome but those who want the handouts can RSVP by calling 620-792-3346, ext. 303.

Also coming up is the Victory Garden of Barton County, located at the Barton County Historical Village, 85 South U.S. 281. There will be a meeting from 12:30-2 p.m. on April 19. Returning members, experienced gardeners and newcomers are welcome.
