The Barton County Health Department has used grant funding to purchase and make available Pocketalk language translation devices throughout Barton County to support clear and effective communication between county agencies and community members.
Pocketalk devices have been made available to county departments, including the Barton County Sheriff’s Office, where they will be used during interactions with community members who speak limited English or have a different primary language.
The Health Department believes clear communication is essential to building trust and ensuring individuals can fully understand and participate in conversations that affect their safety, health, and access to services. Pocketalk devices provide real-time, two-way translation in dozens of languages, helping reduce language barriers and improve understanding.
An important feature of Pocketalk technology is that it is HIPAA-compliant, meaning it meets federal standards for protecting sensitive and personal information. This ensures conversations remain private and secure, helping safeguard the confidentiality of community members.
Health Department Director Karen Winkelman said this initiative reflects the Barton County Health Department’s ongoing commitment to accessibility, equity, and respectful service delivery across all of Barton County.
