Great Bend saw a wave of construction and renovation activity in 2025, led by the multi-million dollar Innovation Center project at 4508 Farmers Plaza Lane. The largest concentration of activity continues along the 10th Street corridor, while significant redevelopment is also occurring at Patton Road and the Kansas Oil and Gas Museum.
Multiple permits tied to construction of a new 17,543-square-foot, one-story Innovation Center were filed in 2025. According to permits filed with the City, the facility will include a commercial kitchen for food production and cooking classes, a childcare center serving infants through age 6, office and conference space, co-working stations, and a fabrication lab for welding, woodworking, sewing, printing and other production activities.
New Bank and Commercial Expansion
Another major project underway is a $3.6 million new two-story Equity Bank branch with a drive-through at 4101 10th St. Additional permits indicate investment of nearly $650,000 for combined mechanical and electrical build-out of the bank building.
At 4107 10th Street, Dillon Real Estate Co. is investing $194,000 to expand the in-store pharmacy, including demolition of an interior wall and upgrades to lighting, flooring and fixtures.
Walmart Realty Company also filed permits totaling more than $140,000 at 3503 10th St. for ATM installation and interior door work.
Demolition and Redevelopment
The last of Midwest Energy’s older fuel oil power plants came down last week in Great Bend. Midwest Energy Inc. moved forward with a $534,100 demolition of the former power plant building at 1025 Patton Road. Built just after World War II, the plant could run on diesel or natural gas, and supplied power for central Kansas for generations, from 1947 through the early 1990s. An additional $75,000 permit was filed for office additions at the same address.
The Kansas Oil and Gas Museum saw several project permits including demolition of an existing structure, construction of a new exhibit and meeting building, mechanical system upgrades and roofing work.
Roofing and Smaller Improvements
Numerous roofing permits were filed across the city, including projects owned by Highland Manor (3007 10th St.), Central Kansas Medical Park (1309 Polk), Concept Commercials (1516 Main), Bank of the Plains (1000 Adams St.) and several Main Street properties. Roofing valuations range from approximately $50,000 to nearly $230,000.
