Proposal in Topeka seeks to get discharged inmates back into voting process

In Kansas, more than 5,000 former inmates re-enter society each year, but still stay disconnected from the democratic process and act of voting.

To help bridge this gap, Rep. Stephanie Sawyer Clayton (D-Overland Park) introduced House Bill 2091 which offers a new approach to voter registration for discharged inmates.

It would require that inmates be offered the opportunity to register to vote, requiring the Secretary of State to develop voter registration programs through state agencies and accredited high schools.
