Tuesday is the last day of school and the City of Great Bend will turn on its Splash Pad at Veterans Memorial Park on Wednesday, May 14. City Administrator Logan Burns reported on this and other City projects at Monday’s Great Bend City Council meeting.
The Wetlands at Great Bend Waterpark usually opens the Saturday before Memorial Day but that could be delayed a couple of days if lifeguards aren’t available. Under the worst case scenario, the opening will be delayed until Memorial Day, May 26.
“It’s imperative that they have lifeguards and several of the lifeguards are taking part in state baseball, softball and track events,” Burns explained. “We’ll see how the rest of the season goes for them.”
Last March, Burns mentioned the possibility of a bond project for a major overhaul of the waterpark. He said Monday that he expects to receive proposals from JEO engineering consultants by the end of the week so the council can decide on the size and scope of the project.
For street projects, Burns said crews are again working on the McKinley St. entrance at the hospital this week.
The project to add a turning signal to the stoplight at U.S. 56 and McKinley will be done sometime this year but for now they are waiting on new poles to arrive.
The City Connecting Link Improvement Program (CCLIP) projects at 10th and Patton Road and Second and Main could start around May 19 but could also be delayed because they are waiting for some rebar to show up.
Budget sheets from all department heads were due last Friday and meetings with the heads will be scheduled from May 21 to June 6, leading up to the council’s budget work session on July 14 at 6 p.m.
