Car chase follows traffic stop
GBPD-patch-2016

A vehicle chase involving the Great Bend Police Department and Barton County Sheriff’s Office ensued following a traffic stop in downtown Great Bend Sunday night, Police Chief Steve Haulmark said.

Shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday, an officer from the Great Bend Police Department initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle at the intersection of Forest Avenue and Morphy Street in reference to a traffic infraction, Haulmark said. The officer exited his vehicle and was going to make contact with the driver of the vehicle, later identified as Layton Luke, 29, when Luke drove away from the scene.

Luke fled from the stop traveling down multiple streets in the City of Great Bend. Barton County Sheriffs Office deputies joined in on the pursuit and the vehicle was eventually stopped in the 10 block of South U.S. 281. Luke was taken into custody, and there were two firearms located in his vehicle at the time it was stopped.

Luke was arrested and transported to the Barton County Jail where he was booked in lieu of bond on charges of felony flee and elude, possession of firearm while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving under the influence, and other charges related to the pursuit.
