Ten a.m. Saturday, a surprise phone call from daughter Jody.

“Mom can you meet me at 12 for a trip to Little Jerusalem?” That was a start to a beautiful Day Trip! We met my other daughter, Jordan who was checking out venues for her next weeklong Northwest Kansas tour.

Kansas is a beautiful and interesting state just out our door! Miles of beautiful milo and corn fields, La Crosse was having a gathering all day and into the night that involved lots of people and food trucks, on Highway 83 at the look-out point there was a huge herd of buffalo grazing the hills.

All this and we hadn’t even reached our destination!

Little Jerusalem was beautiful, serene and eerie. The State Park was nicely planned with several trails of varying distances with benches and look-out areas. The parking lot had cars and campers from all over Kansas, Tennessee, Colorado, Washington State, just to name what we could see.

Next we went to the nearby Monument Rocks. The iconic Keystone formation was breathtaking. Monument Rocks is available to the public because of the grace of a local family. You were literally in their pasture with their cow herd and you could walk right up to the rocks,

It was a great day, What does this have to do with the library? This summer we have been blessed with many people coming to our library as a part of their day trip. Just this week we had a couple from Topeka with their son who was the IT person for the Topeka Public Library. They loved our building and the history behind it. They blessed our day and I think their stop was fun and informative for them.

We have many of the Penner Kansas Tourism books and “83,000 Square Miles, Kansas Day Trips: No Lines No Waiting,” by Steve Harper. Step out your back door, enhance your love and knowledge of Kansas and make connections with fellow travelers. Discover the greatness of Kansas and America.
