Now that Spring is here, people are decorating the graves of loved ones. Meanwhile, officials at area cemeteries want to remind everyone that it’s also mowing season.

The rules of the Great Bend Cemeteries are posted. Here are some that apply:

• All decorations shall be removed from the grave site one week after Memorial Day.

• No more than two personal items per monument.

• The City will not be responsible for loss or damage to any portable articles left upon any lot, grave or other part of the cemetery.

• No flowers on grass during mowing season April through September. The exception is Memorial Day; items can be placed starting May 17.

For questions call the Cemetery Office, 620-793-4167.

Barton County maintains two memorial parks: Hillcrest Cemetery and Golden Belt Cemetery.

According to its rules on decorations:

• Funeral designs, floral pieces and other ornamental items will be removed as soon as they become unsightly. All decorations may be placed on graves seven days prior to and shall be removed from the site seven days after Easter, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, Father’s Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Notice will not be given, and employees will not attempt to find items after being so removed. Additionally, Barton County will not be responsible for the loss of or damage to any appropriate, ornamental items left on any lot, grave or other part of the memorial parks or cemeteries during the listed holiday periods.

Noting that items are removed seven days after a holiday, Golden Belt Cemetery Committee President Toni Rice said the next removal date is May 19 (seven days after Mother’s Day).
