The New Year brought more than resolutions – flu cases are on the rise in Kansas following winter holiday gatherings.

According to Dr. Courtney Huhn with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Risk Less, Do More public education campaign:

• Overall respiratory illness activity in Kansas is very high. 

• COVID-19 and RSV ER visits are moderate and increasing. 

• Flu ER visits are high and increasing.

“We are seeing a variety of symptoms presenting across Kansas due to the high rates of respiratory viral illness,” Dr. Huhn stated. “ER visits for Flu, COVID-19 and RSV are on the rise. Now is the time to protect yourself and others you care about, especially the most vulnerable. If you have not yet received your vaccines, please consider getting them by calling your primary physician or going to vaccine.gov to schedule to receive the vaccines. You can also go to cdc.gov/riskleasdomore to learn more. Also ensure that you are practicing good habits to prevent the spread of infection like hand washing and cleaning frequently touched surfaces and if you feel ill, please consider staying home and masking if you must go out.” 

Katelyn Sigler at the Barton County Health Department shared eight quick tips people can use to protect themselves:

1. Get Vaccinated: Annual flu shots and updated COVID-19 and RSV vaccines are your best defense.

2. Practice Hygiene: Wash hands regularly, use sanitizer, and avoid touching your face.

3. Cover Coughs: Sneeze or cough into a tissue or your elbow.

4. Stay Home When Sick: Avoid spreading germs by staying home if unwell.

5. Consider Masks: Use masks in crowded spaces during peak flu season.

6. Boost Immunity: Eat well, stay hydrated, exercise, and get enough sleep.

7. Clean Surfaces: Disinfect frequently touched areas and improve ventilation.

8. Stay Updated: Follow public health advice and check local flu rates.
