Hoisington’s annual Labor Day celebration wrapped up on Monday with the traditional parade, capping off a four-day weekend of music and entertainment.

A highlight of the parade was a huge Hoisington High School Cardinal pulled by a truck with the “Make Hoisington Great.” Not only did the gigantic bird spout red smoke, it popped out white foam droppings as it passed by the crowd.

Neal Nuss said he built the cardinal, with the help of his classmates from the Class of 1979, for their 20th reunion and it shows up in the parade every three years or so. He also drags it to some of the football games.

“I think people get a kick out of it,” he said. First they are awed by the towering bird, and then they see foam pop out behind it. “They start laughing.”
