Eisenhower Elementary School hosted “The Greatest Math Show,” a carnival-style family math night, on Tuesday, Jan. 13.
It was a school carnival with a twist: Whether children were tossing beanbags at buckets or rings at cones, rolling dice or assembling puzzles, they found themselves solving math problems.
The challenges were adapted for each age group. The smallest children are learning numbers, while older children were challenged to add, subtract, or multiply at the various stations.
There were prizes and free popcorn, and information tables from The Center for Counseling and Consultation, Great Bend Recreation Commission, Kansas Wetlands Education Center and Live Like Jesus Today Ministries.
Families could also pick up information about the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEP), which provides assistance to families that qualify if they’re having trouble paying their gas utility bills in the winter. The 2026 LIEAP application period begins Jan. 20 and ends March 31. More information can be found by visiting the Kansas Department of Children and Families website or calling toll-free at 888-369-4777.
Eisenhower Instructional Coach Katie Zimmerman said the math carnival was one of Great Bend USD 428’s family engagement nights, which take place at each of the schools throughout the year. They foster family involvement and highlight what the children are learning. A Reading Night will take place in the spring.
