Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library! All good things must come to an end eventually, including the Summer Library Program. While we will still have a few events sprinkled throughout the rest of July and August, next Friday, July 24, marks the end of our summer program. But worry not, there is still plenty of dino-tastic fun to be had. For those of you participating in the Summer Reading Program, children’s minutes are due this Friday, July 17. Adults and teens have until July 31 to turn in their minutes. However, alongside the individual reading challenges, we are issuing a library-wide goal to all of our patrons to read 500,000 total minutes by the end of the day on July 17 to Unearth a Party. If we reach our goal, we will host a party featuring an ice cream float bar and a dino movie on Friday, July 24!

As for our other upcoming events, today we have our regular Genealogy Thursday at 11 a.m. Later, check out this month’s Teen Manga & Anime Club at 5:30 p.m. For July’s club meeting, we’ll be covering “My Adventures with Superman” by Tomo Josie Campbell and Pablo M. Collar. “A strange encounter with one of Professor Ivo’s robotic creations leads Superman into a strange struggle with spy agency Checkmate, mercenary Slade Wilson, and even the government of the United States! What does the artificial intelligence known as Amazo want from Superman, and is it friend or foe? Set in between seasons 1 and 2, this is an untold tale from the early years of Superman’s legacy (Goodreads)!” After the discussion, we’ll customize our own graphic coasters!

On Friday at 10:30 a.m., during our last installment of our Adult Show & Tell series, we will be celebrating food and drink as the theme. Grab that special handmade cutting board or the champagne flutes from your wedding and bring your stories to share! Note: Please do not bring in any living creatures. Staff will not be available to help move items.

Friday evening at 7 p.m., we head back to the Jurassic era as part of our Book to Reel Club. You’ve read “The Lost World by Michel Crichton”; now see the summer blockbuster hit of 1997, the follow-up sequel to one of the most famous movies of all time, “Jurassic Park.” The north doors will be open at 6:45 p.m. and will close at 7:15 p.m. We will have free popcorn for all who attend. All ages are welcome.

Our new History Book Club meets again this Saturday at 10:30 a.m. to discuss “1776” by David McCullough, a title fitting to read for the month we celebrate the United States of America’s 250 years. If you want to join in on the discussion, you still have time to grab a copy at the front desk.

This Saturday also marks the deadline for teens who want an afternoon of fun to sign up for our final Tabletop Teens Summer One-Shot, which takes place the following Saturday, July 25. This one-and-done fantasy adventure is open to D&D beginners and veterans alike! Visit greatbendpl.info/teens to sign up. Those who don’t get a spot as a player will be put on the waitlist. Any teens are welcome to come watch as part of the audience (no registration required)!

Next Monday, July 20, we will have a Genealogy Corner at 5 p.m. focusing on how to find family immigration records and how they can be used to research your family tree.

On July 21, in addition to our regular Tech Tuesday at 11 a.m., we will be having our July Open Book Club meeting at 7 p.m. for “The Stolen Queen” by Fiona Davis. This book tells the story of an unlikely duo that teams up to search for a missing artifact and confront the demons of their past in this thrilling novel with dueling time lines.

Watch out for our new Dino Documentary series as part of this summer’s Wonder-Filled Wednesdays! We will be watching Steven Spielberg’s latest documentary about the rise and fall of dinosaurs. Join us at 10:30 a.m. on July 22, July 29, and Aug. 5 to witness the majesty of these giant beasts who once ruled the earth on the big screen.

On Thursday, in addition to our regular Genealogy Thursday at 11 a.m., we will be having Indiana Jones Trivia at Dry Lake Brewing that evening at 7 p.m. Test your knowledge of everything Indy in the first three movies for the chance to win fabulous prizes and free beer!
