STAFFORD — American Legion Auxiliary 131 of Stafford met at Larabee Library on Monday, Sept. 14. The ladies met at the library for their yearly gift of a book to our military collection. Each year they honor the veterans of Stafford that have died that year by selecting and giving us a book that informs our patrons about different aspects of the military.
This year’s selection is the true book “Red Platoon.” This book is a firsthand account of the 14-hour firefight at the Battle of Keating in Afghanistan by Medal of Honor recipient Clinton Romesha. It will interest readers of “Black Hawk Down” by Mark Bowden and “Lone Survivor” by Marcus Luttrell.
Celebrating good books is what we do every month at Recently Read. We will be meeting Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 5:30 p.m. to talk about books we have recently finished and authors that we have enjoyed. Come join this fun evening of talking about books and whatever else comes to mind.
We are looking forward to next week’s Oktoberfest and all the fun events Friday night and all day Saturday. Please come enjoy Stafford Oct. 2 and 3. It will be a weekend adventure to the center of Kansas.
The Library has been given a grant by Golden Belt Community Foundation to start an afternoon program for kids in our community. The Mind-Set Matinee: Fostering Youth Emotional & Mental Awareness Through Storytelling is the title of our program and will involve getting kids to read award winning books and then enjoying the movie of the book together. We are planning to engage different age groups after school one day a week. If you know of a child that would enjoy this activity let us know and we will get the program started.
Oct. 28 all day, the library will be open for Medicare Enrollment sign-up. This has been a very successful way to partner with the Senior Center and people in need of information about Medicare. Call the library for an appointment.
Plan ahead to help us decorate the Library for Christmas by signing up to make Victorian ornaments the first two Fridays in November. Learn to make one for yourself and one for the Library tree.
