Public Works Department conducting open burn week
GBcitylogoUSE.jpg

The City of Great Bend Public Works Department will be conducting an open burn of trees at the compost site located at 97 SW 5th Ave., beginning Monday, Nov. 3.

According to weather reports, wind gusts in Kansas tend to peak from November to January. Due to the volume of trees that need burned, the city cannot delay the process until the new year, prompting the urgency to conduct the open burn this week.

Favorable conditions for the burn would include sustained north winds. However, forecasts predict a mix of north and south winds. In this case, strong gusts from the south would be optimal to carry smoke out of the city and prevent it lingering and becoming a nuisance to the community.

Public Works will not feed the fire overnight and there will be continuous 24/7 in-person surveillance throughout the burn.
