Barton Community College can thank the band Metallica for a recent grant, said President Dr. Marcus Garstecki. In reviewing recent grants, he noted that the college has also received federal funding for the AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP program after a one-year funding cut.

Metallica

The heavy metal band created the Metallica All Within My Hands (AWMH) Foundation, which funds the Metallica Scholars Initiative in partnership with the American Association of Community Colleges. AWMH is dedicated to creating sustainable communities by supporting workforce education, the fight against hunger, and other critical local services.

According to their website: “The Foundation aims to assist and enrich the lives of members of the communities who have supported the band for years, as well as encourage participation from fans and friends. All funds raised will be donated to a cross-section of national and local charities ... every penny from your donations will go directly to our charity partners.”

RSVP

Last year, when federal funding to RSVP was canceled, the college continued to sponsor the program. Dr. Garstecki noted the program has again received a grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service.

The program provides essential services to many citizens, including delivery of over 1,200 Meals on Wheels each month and rides to critical medical appointments. Barton Community College has sponsored RSVP for 50 years.
